How to Style Linen Pants: Outfit Ideas for Summer
I first shared this post a few summers ago, and since then, linen pants have only become more popular and more widely available in a variety of styles and price points, so I thought it was time for a refresh. I’ve updated it with a few newer styles I’ve added to my closet, along with some outfit ideas and styling tips for wearing linen pants this summer.

I’ll admit that I’ve always gravitated more toward denim and tailored trousers, but over the years I’ve found a handful of linen styles that work well for me. As the category has expanded, it’s become much easier to find options with more structure and polish than the drawstring styles that used to dominate the market.
Whether you prefer a relaxed drawstring style, a tailored trouser silhouette, or something in between, linen pants can be a stylish and practical option for hot summer days. I hope these looks give you a few ideas for making them feel modern, polished, and easy to wear. And if you’re shopping for a new pair, I’ve also included a roundup of my favorite linen pants at the end of the post.
1. Pair Linen Pants with a Structured Top
One of my favorite ways to wear linen pants is with a more structured top. Since linen naturally has a relaxed feel, pairing it with a fitted muscle tee or power shoulder top creates a nice balance and keeps the outfit from feeling too casual.

In this outfit, I paired brown linen pants with a ribbed green muscle tee and simple accessories. I like how the clean lines of the top balance the relaxed drape of the pants, while the rich brown color gives the look a sophisticated feel. It’s an easy outfit formula that feels polished without trying too hard and works for everything from lunch with friends to casual dinner plans.

2. Pair Linen Pants with a Simple Tank or Tee

One of the simplest ways to style linen pants is with a simple tank or t-shirt. Keeping the top streamlined lets the pants take center stage, and it’s a formula that works whether you’re wearing a bold color, a relaxed drawstring style, or a more tailored trouser silhouette.
Quince Patch Pocket Linen Pants + Black Tank
A simple tank is one of the easiest tops to pair with linen pants, especially when you’re traveling. The fitted silhouette balances the relaxed shape of the pants, while the flat front with button-and-zipper closure and patch-pocket details give these linen pants a slightly more polished feel than a typical drawstring style.
I kept the accessories simple with metallic sandals, a straw clutch, and a few coastal-inspired pieces of jewelry. It’s an easy outfit formula that feels relaxed enough for vacation but still polished enough for dinner or sightseeing.

Pink Linen Pants + White Tee
These bright pink linen pants make enough of a statement on their own, so I kept the rest of the outfit simple with a white v-neck tee and metallic sandals. When you’re wearing a bold color, a simple top allows the pants to take center stage without the outfit feeling overwhelming.
Looking back, I’d probably add a chunkier necklace or statement earrings to give the outfit a more current feel, but the overall formula still works. Pairing a colorful linen pant with neutral basics is an easy way to incorporate a bold color while staying within your comfort zone.

Green Linen Cargo Pants + Black Tee
This outfit shows how versatile linen pants can be for everyday wear. The fitted black tee keeps the look simple and streamlined, while the cargo styling and drawstring waist add to the relaxed, casual vibe.
I paired them with Birkenstocks for an easy weekend look, but swapping them for leather sandals and adding a few statement accessories would instantly dress the outfit up. It’s a great reminder that linen pants don’t have to feel overly beachy or resort-inspired—they can be just as practical and easy to wear as your favorite jeans.

3. Pair Linen Pants with a Button-Down Shirt

A button-down shirt is one of the easiest ways to make linen pants feel a little more polished. Whether you choose a classic cotton shirt or a linen version, the tailored shape balances the relaxed feel of the pants and creates an outfit that looks put-together without sacrificing comfort.
Linen Utility Joggers + a White Linen Button-Down
Linen doesn’t always have to mean wide-leg trousers. These linen utility joggers offer a more casual take on the trend, but pairing them with a simple white linen button-down keeps the overall look feeling polished.
I also love the linen-on-linen combination here. Because the pieces are in neutral shades and have clean, tailored lines, the outfit feels relaxed and sophisticated rather than overly casual. It’s an easy formula for hot summer days when you want to stay cool without sacrificing style.

5. Create a Monochromatic Look

Monochromatic outfits are one of my favorite ways to make linen pants feel a little more elevated. When you’re working within a single color palette, the focus shifts to the different textures in the outfit, which creates interest without relying on bold colors or prints.
Black Linen Pants + Black Linen Vest
A matching linen vest and pants create a sleek, modern look that feels polished without being overly formal. I especially love this outfit formula for summer because the vest provides structure while the linen fabric keeps everything lightweight and breathable.

Since the outfit is all one color, the accessories play an important role. I carried an ivory east-west bag to add some contrast and keep the look feeling light, and paired it with black open-toe wedge slingbacks for a little height and polish while maintaining the streamlined feel of the outfit. An ivory strappy heel would work really well here, too.
And for another option, SPANX has a similar linen vest and wide-leg pant set, with four colors to choose from.

Black Linen Pants + Black Tank
For a more casual take on monochromatic dressing, try pairing black linen pants with a simple black tank.

I added a utility jacket for a little extra structure. The mix of linen, ribbed knit, leather sandals, and raffia accessories keeps the outfit from feeling flat.
Style Tip: Monochromatic outfits work best when you mix textures. Combining linen, knitwear, leather, raffia, and metal accessories adds depth and dimension while maintaining a clean, cohesive look.
