Deepti Sharma Creates History Against Pakistan,
India’s women’s team kicked off their Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign in style. On June 14th at Edgbaston in Birmingham, they faced Pakistan and started strong, batting first and putting up 170 runs. Smriti Mandhana played a standout innings, with Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh adding valuable runs as well.
But really, it was Deepti Sharma’s performance that grabbed everyone’s attention. She didn’t get many runs with the bat, but with the ball, she tore through Pakistan’s lineup, picking up five wickets while giving away just 10 runs.
This spell put Deepti Sharma at the top of the all-time wickets chart in WT20I cricket—her fifth wicket took her tally to 166, moving her past Thailand’s Thipatcha Putthawong, who has 165. Thanks to Deepti’s magic, India restricted Pakistan to just 106 and won the game easily.
Deepti earned the Player of the Match award for her five-wicket haul. After the match, she stood in the spotlight, sharing her thoughts. She said she was thankful for the team and credited her performance to God as well.
“I am very grateful. I like these kind of wickets, all credit goes to the team and I am very grateful, Hanuman Ji is great. I like ICC tournaments – I think, from there I started, so I like it. (What was the key to bowling on this surface today?) I think because it’s turning, so I am varied my pace in every ball and every over. That helped me a lot. Yeah, because it’s turning, so I just believed that I have to bowl a little bit slower in the air and just believing in myself and bowling in the right areas. That’s what I was doing,” Deepti Sharma said after the game.
