CSK Leave MS Dhoni’s IPL 2027 Call Entirely in His Hands

Chennai Super Kings have made their position clear on MS Dhoni’s future. The franchise will not put any pressure on him to return for IPL 2027, with CEO Kasi Viswanathan saying the decision rests completely with MS Dhoni himself.

Speaking recently, Viswanathan said CSK’s management has always respected Dhoni’s space when it comes to retirement talks. The message from the franchise is simple, Dhoni will decide when and how he wants to continue.

CSK also made it clear that Dhoni will always have a place in the setup, no matter the role. Whether he returns as a player, mentor, or coach, the doors remain open for the former captain who helped shape the franchise’s identity over the years.

Even with no official confirmation yet, there is optimism inside the camp. Viswanathan shared that, based on his understanding, he expects Dhoni to be back next season. But he added that no formal discussion has taken place yet, with the franchise waiting for Dhoni to make his call.

A big reason behind the hope for a return is Dhoni’s bond with the Chennai crowd. The franchise still believes he could come back to fulfil his promise of playing his final IPL game at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, better known as Chepauk.

That farewell moment did not happen in IPL 2026. Dhoni missed the entire season while recovering from a long calf injury, leaving fans disappointed as they were unable to see him on the field in yellow. His absence only increased speculation around whether his IPL career has ended or if one final chapter is still left.

Former players have also pointed to the timing of IPL 2027 as an important factor. With the season coming before another major mega auction cycle, it could become a natural point of transition for both Dhoni and CSK. Much will likely depend on how Dhoni feels physically over the coming months.

For now, CSK are not rushing anything. The franchise is waiting, the fans are hoping, and the final word belongs to Dhoni.
