Mirren Sweater Tank in Ivory

MY THOUGHTS: I had high hopes for this one on the hanger. I really need a few white or off-white tops that work well on their own or layered under jackets and cardigans. I like that this one has a double layer, so it isn’t see-through, and the outer layer is slightly looser, which helps prevent clinging.

Unfortunately, something about the fit just felt off on me. The small was too snug, while the medium (wearing here) was too loose under the arms and showed my bra.

VERDICT: Sadly, this one stayed behind.

Splendid Eris Short Sleeve Sweater in Firework

MY THOUGHTS: This color is so pretty, and it’s a lovely fabric, but the proportions didn’t quite work for me. The shorter length combined with the longer sleeves felt a little off.

Quince Summer Style Finds

I ordered a handful of summer staples from Quince to try and share with you since they do such a great job with affordable wardrobe basics. I’m also a big fan of their jewelry and luggage.

I have the quilted duffle and the expandable carry-on, and I’m thinking of adding the small carry-on for quick trips, like my visit to Virginia this weekend. I love that Coastal Cobalt, a limited-edition color that’s a fun departure from the sea of black luggage that seems to dominate every baggage carousel.

100% European Linen Sleeveless Swing Dress in Blue Pinstripe

MY THOUGHTS: I have this dress in black already, but I thought the blue pinstripe would be a fun option for summer. It’s incredibly light and breezy.

VERDICT: Keeping!

Cotton Cashmere Ribbed Tank in Black

MY THOUGHTS: This is a beautiful piece, and I love the silk-cashmere blend. It is fairly body-conscious, though, so I think I’d like to try the large for a little more ease.

VERDICT: Exchanging for a large.

MY THOUGHTS: This is a really fun piece. I love that it looks like a skirt—even from the back—but has built-in shorts for comfort and modesty. The overlap panel is also a trendy touch.

VERDICT: I think I might actually keep this one! I’d like to try it with a shorter top, though. Fit tip: The medium is snug at the waist, but it looks good everywhere else with no pulling, so I’d say it runs true to size.

100% Washable Silk Slip Dress in Tiny Dot Black/ White

MY THOUGHTS: I was surprised by how much I liked this! I usually don’t feel like bias-cut skirts do much for me, but this one is really pretty on. It does have a bit of a lingerie-inspired feel, though, which is slightly outside my comfort zone. I especially appreciate the adjustable straps since I’m short-waisted and most dresses are too long through the torso on me.

VERDICT: I might keep this to wear out to dinner with Paul this summer. Also, the silk/cashmere wrap is a great piece to have on hand for dressier occasions, weddings, and events. It comes in tons of colors.

Mongolian Cashmere Tee in Pale Custard Yellow

MY THOUGHTS: This is a beautiful sweater, and I really like the sleeve design. They’re not quite as long as some, which I find much more flattering. And this pale yellow shade is so pretty. Butter yellow is having a moment right now, but it’s still soft and wearable.

VERDICT: Keeping this one. Fit tip: I sized up to a large for a bit more room and a slightly more relaxed fit.

MY THOUGHTS: I like this, but not quite as much as the cashmere tee. It has a more relaxed fit, and I could probably size down to a medium in this one. It’s very pretty, though, and the price point is appealing.

VERDICT: Since I’m keeping the other one, I’ll return this. I may try another color in a medium.

Bella Stretch Palazzo Jeans in Seaside Blue

MY THOUGHTS: I really like the fit and feel of these! The extra-wide leg isn’t as overwhelming as I anticipated because they’re still fairly fitted through the hips and thighs. They’re also very comfortable.

VERDICT: I believe I’m going to keep these!

Summer Tops, Shorts & Denim

Next up, a mix of summer tops, shorts, and jeans I’ve tried recently.

Relaxed Ribbed Boatneck Tank Top in Light Yellow

MY THOUGHTS: This is a nice piece at a great price point! I’m loving yellow this summer, and this is a slightly deeper shade than the Quince cashmere tee. I like the chunky rib knit, and it’s a nice length—not too cropped and not too long. It’s also 100% cotton, which is always a plus.

VERDICT: Holding onto this one.

SuperSoft Drawstring Denim Midi Shorts in Light Wash Indigo

PRODUCT DETAILS: Soft, non-stretch denim. Light indigo wash with fading and whiskering. Drawcord ties and button closure, zip fly. Classic five-pocket styling. Low slung. Easy through the hip and thigh.

• Care: Machine wash.

MY THOUGHTS: These jean shorts are just okay for me. I like the way they look, but they feel a bit snug through the waist, and the denim is fairly rigid. If I sized up for comfort, I worry they’d start to look sloppy. The tie waist is cute, but it also makes them a little less versatile since it really needs to be shown, which limits the tops I’d want to wear with them.

VERDICT: I’m probably sending these back.

MY THOUGHTS: These shorts from Spanx are definitely a more polished option, but I don’t think they’re the most flattering on me. I ordered the large because Spanx tends to run snug through the waist, but they ended up looking too big everywhere else. The fit just felt a little off overall.

VERDICT: I’ll be passing these on. I much prefer the fit and overall look of my Vineyard Vines white twill shorts, and I probably don’t need both anyway.

Splendid Shelly Smocked Tank in Firework

MY THOUGHTS: Okay, this little top—I love it! It’s the same gorgeous orangey-red shade as the off-balance short-sleeve sweater I tried on at EVEREVE, but the fit works so much better for me.

It fits perfectly through the arms, and the slightly boxy silhouette skims the body without clinging. It’s one of those easy pieces that looks polished without trying too hard.

VERDICT: Keeping this, for sure. I plan to pack it for Virginia this weekend, or I may even wear it on the plane with a jacket on top.

KUT from the Kloth Maya High-Rise Wide Leg in Protect

MY THOUGHTS: These jeans are so fun! I love the shoelace drawstring detail. I still have a pair from last year that looks very similar, so I probably won’t keep these, but I do really like this wash—possibly even more than last year’s version. They’re also about an inch longer, which makes them work a little better with a heel.

VERDICT: Probably returning these since I already have a nearly identical pair, but they’re a great option if you missed them last year.

Also, as an aside, I love these Dolce Vita Averie Heels. The retro wooden sole, criss-cross straps, and metal studs give them a subtle boho-chic vibe that’s right up my alley!

Rivete Fresh Cut Seamed Boyfriend Shorts in Light Wash

MY THOUGHTS: These jean shorts from LOFT are a definite no for me. The legs are much wider than I prefer, and the overall shape just isn’t very flattering on me. They are comfortable, though, and I could see them working well for someone who likes a looser fit.

VERDICT: These are going back.

Donna Karan New York Faux Wrap Sheath Dress in Panna Cotta

MY THOUGHTS: This one feels a bit more modern to me, and you know I’m loving butter yellow right now. But I’m not sure the fit is quite right. There was some bunching across the back, which made me question the fit. It’s a pretty dress, but I’m not completely convinced.

VERDICT: Probably sending this one back.

Donna Karan New York Twist Waist Sheath Dress in Lawn

MY THOUGHTS: This may be my top contender so far. I love the color, and I like the sleek column silhouette with the side slit. The twisted detail is a pretty touch, too. I also appreciate how well it fits around the armholes—no gaping, and it’s bra-friendly.

My biggest hesitation is the bunching it’s doing across the back. This seems to be a recurring theme with a lot of these dresses, although it’s not quite as noticeable as it was on the yellow one. I’m already wearing shapewear in these photos, so this is probably as smooth as it’s going to get.

I also don’t love a jewel neckline on myself and would generally prefer something a little more open.

VERDICT: Deciding…

Splendid Wren Mini Dress

I also like that it’s designed a little longer in the back, which gives it nice coverage without making it feel oversized or shapeless.

VERDICT: Keeping! Also love these strappy black slides.

LOFT Dotted Jacquard Mini Pocket Dress

VERDICT: I won’t be keeping this one.

Anne Klein Eyelet Embroidery Sleeveless Shirtdress

MY THOUGHTS: This is a gorgeous color, and I love the idea of a shirt dress in embroidered fabric—a two-for-one trend that also happens to be a classic style you can wear for years.

Sadly, it just doesn’t flatter me. I think it’s a combination of the stiffness of the fabric and the way it gathers above the waist, but it doesn’t do much for my shape. That said, I do think it could work really well on someone else, and the quality is quite nice.

VERDICT: Passing on this one.
